Firefly - Series 1
You could call Firefly a sci-fi western, and you'd be right, but it's more than that. You could call it drama, but it's more than that. You could call it comedy, but it's still more. It's a love story and a horror story and a tragedy and a triumphal march. Put another way, it's the best thing I've ever seen on TV.
In this vision of the future, cultures have blended so that everybody curses in Chinese and instructions are written in both English and Mandarin. A vast and powerful central government exerts its rule over the new solar system that humanity has colonized. And, on the outskirts of that solar system, the people who lost the war that unified it slip around the outposts of authority, finding work where they can, legal or not. Malcolm Reynolds was a sergeant in the war, and now he's a captain, but he still finds himself in the Alliance's sights more often than not. When he takes on a fugitive pair of siblings, things get much more dangerous, and also wonderful, enthralling, exhilarating, suspenseful, and heartbreaking; and, since this is a Joss Whedon show, funny.
It only ran for fourteen out-of-order episodes, episodes loved by critics and the viewers who saw them, before it was cancelled, and that's how Firefly should have died before its time. But it didn't, because it touched the people who saw it so much that they couldn't let it go. That's why a big damn movie was made to partially wrap up the story that Firefly began; that's why, today, four years after its cancellation, browncoats are still holding Firefly viewings and spreading the word to their friends about how good this show is, how good the characters are. It's dark and bright and grim and cheerful and brilliant. It's one of the best shows ever made, a bargain at any price, and you won't regret watching it.
